Reasons for sending elderly people to senior care homes

from:

Sending your elderly parent or relative to senior care homes may seem cold-hearted for some, especially to those who are used to close-knit families but many argue that it is more cold-hearted to just leave them alone in the house to fend for themselves and just be around after work hours. At least, with senior care homes they will have round the clock attention and their health will be monitored to boot.

There are many reasons why families opt for senior care homes instead of taking care of their parents and relatives themselves. Here are some of the most common.

1. They don't have the time

Most Americans have a day job that they have to go to. Some even have side jobs that they go to after their permanent ones and unless you hold an extremely high position in a corporation, chances are you won't have the time to take care of an elderly family member. This is one of the primary reasons why nursing and senior care homes are so popular. These homes provide the attention and care that family members cannot give because of time constraints.

2. They can't monitor sensitive medical conditions

Elderly people who are generally healthy are easy to take care of. Some can even be entrusted to guard the house when the family members are out for work. But not all senior people enjoy the same health condition. Some have health problems that make then weak and bed-ridden. Some even have worse conditions that require close attention. When this is the situation, you have no choice but to send them to special senior care facilities that can provide to their the medical care and attention that they need. With in house medical personnel doctors, psychologists, physical therapists, nurses and nutritionists you can be sure that their health will be closely monitored. This is especially true if they have medications that they need to take regularly.

3. They can't provide the proper diet

Elderly people require different nutrients and there are a lot of foods that they can no longer eat. In senior care homes, they are provided with foods that are more appropriate to their needs, their metabolism and their nutritional requirements. This is because foods are prepared under the supervision of the in house nutritionist who provide for the menu and schedule of food intake. Some even request a special diet to treat a medical condition but these often have additional fees.
