Skin Care for Seniors
from:Senior care not only aims to provide medical care for the elderly. Sometimes, personal care is also given the utmost attention. This is especially true when providing skin care for the elderly. Improving the skin of older people can also help in making them feel good about themselves. Skin care may also be provided to help take care of a number of skin problems that the elderly might experience due to the different circumstances that they are in. Here are some tips on skin care that may be applicable for older people depending on the different conditions.
In maintaining cleanliness, older people may need to take care of their skin. It is important to know that older people are more prone to dry skin especially those who live in drier areas. It is just as important to note that frequent washing may not necessarily help keep dry skin away. In fact, excess soap and water that comes with frequent washing may also wash away the natural oils in the skin that keeps it moisturized. When trying to avoid dry skin, the best way would be washing using as little soap as possible. Using mild or soap for delicate skin might even be better.
Itchy skin is a frequent problem among the elderly. The way to avoid it when caring for older people is trying to keep their skin moisturized. Well moisturized skin usually feels less itchy. It is a good idea to apply lotion or moisturizers on the skin after bathing an elderly resident to help keep the skin maintain its smoothness and its moisture. If the skin of an elderly patient does become itchy, try to refrain from scratching the affected parts for relief. Instead, try to make use of a soft terry wash cloth to massage away the itchiness of the skin. This will help avoid damaging the skin or further aggravating the itchiness.
Another way of maintaining good skin care for the elderly is by providing them with the right nutrition. Senior care also includes providing the elderly with the right nutrition that can help keep them become healthier. This includes skin health of the elderly. Care givers should ensure that the elderly follow a proper diet that will ensure their continuous good health. But sometimes, their poor appetites may make this a problem. It can also be important to prepare meals in a tasty manner in order to ensure that the elderly may also enjoy eating instead of thinking of it as merely a chore. Good nutrition will help make skin care less of a worry as well as make care giving for the elderly less stressful in general.
